Top 3 Best Free Blogging Platforms

When we think of blogging, the first thing that comes to our mind is the blogging platform. There are many blogging platforms to choose from. Though it is always best to blog with a Domain and a paid host, if you are new to blogging, I would advice you to start with a free blog. The main reason why you have to blog with a free blog at first because there is so many things you have to learn. And free blog is the best option using which you can learn everything. Coming to free blogging platforms, even though there are many options available, my top 3 best free blogging platforms are the following:

3. LiveJournal:

LiveJournal is a free blogging platform, which lets you to control your blog. You can either keep it public or choose to show it only to your friends. Though many don’t use this blogging platform, it is still a good one. You can learn many things. If you want to blog, join communities and have fun with photos in the same place, then LiveJournal is for you.

2. WordPress:

WordPress.com is a free blogging platform, which allows you to experience the power of self-hosted WordPress for free. But you are restricted from adding plug ins and customizing your theme. With WordPress, you can add extra pages like the Contact and About page in your blog which many other platforms don’t offer. But even though WordPress gives many options, they don’t allow you to monetize your blog. You cannot do research by placing AdSense in your blog. Still WordPress is a good platform for blogging. One great blogger I know, who is still in WordPress, is Lorelle.

1. Blogger:

Blogger is owned by Google. It is a free blogging platform where most bloggers start. Since most of the blogs started in this platform are abruptly stopped at some point of time, people treat it as a “Splog“. I started my blogging with a Blogger blog and then moved to WordPress(the self-hosted one). Blogger also allows you to monetize your blog. You can play with AdSense(without crossing their limits). You have so many themes available which you can have it for your blog if you know a little coding. I strongly recommend Blogger for those who are new to blogging and wish to learn about blogging. One famous blogger, who is using Blogger, is Amit.

There is a heated conversation going in Blogging Tips blog where the author asks you which is the best free blogging platform and why.

Not only these three, but there are many free blogging platforms available. Which is your favorite and why?

Hey good post there. For free blogging platforms, I’d suggest to go for Blogger.

Shankar, I agree. Blogger is the best for beginners since it allows them to monetize their blog.

WORDPRESS WORDPRESS! GO WORDPRESS!

My 101% vote for WordPress. liveJournal is popular only because of its support to OpenID and as an identity profile as it was established time back from Blogger and WORDPRESS!!!

WORDPRESS WORDPRESS! GO WORDPRESS!

Rishi, WordPress is good. But I would vote only to WordPress self-hosted and if you ask me in this three, as I said, I will vote for Blogger.

Yea, Agreed with Blogger! Long time back I was with Blogger too :-)

Ben, Blogger has an easy interface. And I also started with blogger. :)

Lemme see…I can’t access livejournal here in UAE and blogger is a bit buggy so I am very happy with wordpress. I am in the process of migrating to my own domain using the wordpress platform again. Now I am free to monetize, customize and design my site.

Grace, Nice that you are moving to your own domain. Do let us know when you have done 100%. :)

How about the monetization? Can livejournal do very well in monetization?

Ken, good question. According to their TOS, it seems we cannot place paid advertisements without their approval. I don’t know about placing AdSense.

Nice one… Myself new for blogging and am using Blogger.. great one to start with variety of templates and design to choose with..

Sunil, you did the right thing by choosing blogger. When you plan to move to your own domain, go for WordPress.org. It is the best in my opinion.

I’m really interested to know, why did Blogger outrank Wordpress and stand as #1 instead of #2?

Jonanthan, I’m referring to WordPress.com in this post. When you compare WordPress.com with Blogger, Blogger is much better since it allows people to monetize their blog. If compared with WordPress.org, then surely Blogger would be second. :)

I disagree with Blogger being #1, because, you can’t “roll your own” blogger (as far as I’m aware). While it may be a great blogging tool, what about the issue with some other provider owning your content? You could have years upon years of content and posts that could be lost in an instant if Blogger decides to close your blog. It’s their right, and you can’t stop them…unless you have your own host and blogging platform…well and perform backups ‘just in case’. I use WordPress over at JohnTyra.com and I really like it, especially after you tweak the performance! =)

I think Blogger is a great tool for beginners to blogs as it’s easy to use and configure. For those with a little more knowledge then a self-hosted installation of Wordpress probably can’t be beaten.
