Twhirl is one of the many twitter clients. Unlike many other clients, twhirl is easy to use.

I assume you are on twitter (after all who is not in twitter these days?). Though many people prefer tweeting through the web, using a twitter client will increase your productivity.

Though there are many twitter clients, I have always preferred to use Tweetdeck. But for the last few days tweetdeck was not working for me and I had to switch to twhirl.

Twhirl is simple and makes tweeting fun. But if you are new to twhirl or thinking of giving twhirl a try, these are 5 basic settings that you should change in twhirl for better tweeting.

1. API limit

Go to settings and you will see an option called network. In this you can set the API limit. You cannot set twhirl (or any application for that matter) to update once every few seconds. If you do, you will reach the API limits and you won’t be able to tweet using the client for sometime. The API normally resets every one hour.

In this API, set how many requests you need per hour. I have set it to 30 requests per hour as you can see in the image. Once you do this, twhirl will automatically adjust the options that are following based on the requests you have set per hour.

I have disabled it for direct messages because I get DM notifications to my mail. I want to reply quickly to people who @ me and that is the reason why I have set my replies to update faster than tweets.

You can do this based on your requirements but don’t forget to set this.

2. Retweet Format

You can see the retweet format under ‘general’ in settings. The retweet format is by default like the below image.

You need to replace ‘retweeting’ with ‘RT’.

The reason why you should do this is because when you retweet by saying ”retweeting”, more characters are utilized. So change it to RT.

3. Notification with Sound

In twhirl, you have the option of getting notified of new tweets with sound. When you select this, you will be notified for all the tweets. But I feel that I get more distracted when I set this. At the same time, when I’m in some other room, I don’t want to miss my replies.

So what I do is I set sound for only the replies. Check the box which says ‘only play sound on replies/directs’.

4. Do Not Hide When Minimized

Twhirl gives you the option of automatically hiding the client when you minimize. I normally do not prefer this. I don’t want twhirl to hide whenever I minimize. I don’t have the habit of having too many applications running at the same time. So having twhirl running without hiding will not be a problem for me.

Go to settings and select general tab. Here you have to uncheck the box that says ‘hide when minimized’.

5. Lookup Profiles in Browser

Most of the twitter clients have this function where if you click on a user’s profile, it will be loaded in the client itself. I hate this since I cannot get a proper view of the user profile in the client. It shows in a small column. Even if it did show in a big space, I would never prefer to see the profiles in the client.

Go to the general tab under settings and click on the drop down list box which says ‘By default, lookup profiles’. Select ‘in browser’.

After you do all this, don’t forget to save. If you don’t save, the changes won’t have any effect.

Try twhirl for a change and see how it works for you. Let me know in the comments what other settings need to be changed in twhirl when someone has just installed twhirl or started using twhirl.

Challenges are fun isn’t it? In my case, it really was interesting. I took the 7 day pure self-discipline challenge last week (on 3rd June). The challenge ended yesterday and here is the result.

What did I challenge myself to do?

I followed this post written by Glen Allsop in his blog on pure self-discipline and challenged myself the following three things:

1. One blog post everyday in this blog for seven days

2. No twitter

3. Sleep for not more than 6 hours (11PM-5AM)

The Results:

1. One blog post everyday for seven days

This one didn’t come out like I wished. I was supposed to write 7 posts (one everyday). But I ended up writing only 4 posts. But hey, 4 posts in 7 days is better than 1 post a week. It was quite hard to write one post a day since I’m not quite used to it.

This challenge helped me a lot and I’m sure my posting frequency will only get better. Also I’ll be concentrating on quality of blog posts.

2. No twitter

This one was a success. I didn’t post a single tweet for a full week. In fact I hadn’t posted for 2 days when I started the challenge. That makes 9 days of no tweeting. There were 3-4 tweets which were automated from Friendfeed. I disabled the automatic ‘friendfeed to twitter’ posting one day before the challenge ended.

This increased my productivity. I had time to accomplish a lot of things.

3. Sleep for not more than 6 hours (11PM-5AM)

This went on well on all days except Saturday. On Saturday, I slept at 12PM and got up at only 8AM. That’s 8 hours. The rest of the days were pretty good. I didn’t sleep exactly at 11PM or get up exactly at 5AM but somewhat in that range.

This also helped me in becoming more productive. I had time to play football (or soccer if that’s how you call it) every morning with my friends and yet get my work done.

This challenge is surely a success. Now I can stay away from twitter whenever I wish and still be happy. I can get up early in the morning and be productive throughout the day.

Did you take up the challenge? Or will you be taking up the challenge? Please let me know your views in the comments. I’ll be glad to hear what you have got to share.

Negative things keep happening to everyone. Do you get frustrated or do you try to find the hiding positive in the negative?

It is so common for people to face negatives. By negatives, I mean those things that you don’t want to happen. Let us focus on the blogging part of our life alone now.

Image: Optimist, PlanTrees by Heart of Oak

Scenario 1 – Broken Blog Theme

You start a blog and in just few days your blog theme doesn’t function properly due to some change you did in the code while editing your blog sidebar. Would you sit down and get angry over your blog? I know people who quit blogging because things don’t go their way.

What should you do?

Instead of getting angry at yourself for editing the sidebar, sit straight for a moment. Clear the fear in your mind. Login to a social networking site (me in twitter) or instant messenger and ask for your friends for help. Do what your (trusted) friend says.

The hidden positive

You know how to solve the issue that you faced. So now you don’t need to be afraid again when editing your blog’s code. Also you will understand how helpful your friends are.

Image: Optimism by baejaar

Scenario 2 – Comment Spam

This happens for almost every blog. It is funny how the spammers get to know about your blog before the search engines even index it. If your blog doesn’t receive comment spam, you can consider yourself lucky or your blog is not worth being in the internet. Okay maybe that is too much. Anyway, don’t get angry with the spam comments.

What you should do?

Install Akismet plugin for WordPress. If you still get many spam comments, especially from a particular IP address, block that IP address.

The hidden positive

See the spam comments this way. The more spam comments you get, more popular your blog is. In mathematical terms:

Comment spam is directly proportional to your blogs popularity.

The next time you receive spam comments, be happy that your blog got one step more popular.

Image: Money by jenn_jenn

Scenario 3 – A Big $0 Income from Your Blog

Blogs will not earn you money (a living) unless you get huge traffic. It won’t earn you even a penny when you are starting unless you are really good at it. I never earned a penny on the first day. Sometimes you won’t earn money after 1, 2 or even 6 months.

What you should do?

This is the tough period in blogging. Once you cross this, you will start earning money (I cannot guarantee a living). Keep your focus on blogging and do it as a hobby. This way it will never bore you when you are waiting for the numbers to appear in your paypal or adsense account.

The hidden positive

You will learn how not to quit when you are facing hard challenges in your life. It will help you keep going even when the target you want to achieve is so far from you.

Almost every negative has a positive. You should only be happy when you are facing a negative.

A negative can teach you a lot more than what a positive can teach you.

So keep going in your life looking for the positives in every negative.

Please share your views in the comments.

I have set myself few challenges which you can see in the post that I wrote yesterday. One of them is to post everyday for 7 days in this blog. Today is second day. I’m right on track in this challenge.

I had a busy day today after coming from college at 4PM finishing the last exam of fourth semester.

My Experience

As I have set myself a challenge to write everyday, I wrote a ‘how to’ post. Now you are probably wondering where the ‘how to’ post is. That’s is where I did a mistake.

I completed writing a post and took a screen shot of what one has to do to make the ‘how to’ trick work. But I didn’t take a screen shot of the result. It took me nearly 30 minutes to write the post and 10 minutes to take screen shot, edit and upload to Flickr.

Just before hitting the publish button, I wanted to verify if the ‘how to’ worked properly. To my surprise, I found it not working. Maybe there was a temporary problem with the site I was going to write about.

So lesson learned

Always check before you post a ‘how to’ post. Check if you get the desired result. Why waste time writing the post only to find that the trick no longer works?

Value your time. Check before you post a ‘how to’.

‘7 days of pure self-discipline’ is kind of a challenge which Glen posted in his blog. I’m a regular reader of his blog and I thought I should take up the challenge.

What is the challenge?

Simple. You have to list your daily activities that you want to stop doing and those things that you want to do for 7 days in a row. This might sound a bit vague to you. I’ll explain everything in this post and I’ll tell you what I’m going to for this 7 day challenge.

Before you read everything, let me make it clear that you don’t have to pay for anything. This is just a simple and fun challenge.

First you have to sit down and write down your daily activities that are affecting your productivity. This can be something like “Don’t watch TV”. After you come up with those, write down a list of things that you want to do everyday. You can write things like workout for one hour a day.

Don’t set yourself with a big list. Limit the list to 5. As Leo Babauta says in his blog posts, “Start with one at a time”. You can start with 3-5 small things for this challenge. Not more than that.

My List (Starting on 03 June)

1. One blog post everyday in this blog for seven days

2. No twitter

3. Sleep for not more than 6 hours (11PM-5AM)

Why do I want to do these?

1. One blog a day for seven days

I have always felt that I don’t write a lot in this blog. I want to write good posts here and help bloggers learn more about blogging by sharing my experiences. I won’t be stopping it with seven days. I have planned to make it my habit. Let’s see how this one goes.

2. No twitter

I thought this should be the toughest of the three tasks I have set for myself. But seeing that I haven’t tweeted for the past 2 days, I’m sure I can do this. By not tweeting for a week, I will learn how to limit the time I spend on twitter. I normally spend 2-3 hours a day in twitter. But this challenge will help me limit the twitter usage after seven days.

I won’t stop tweeting completely after 7 days. I will tweet for 15-20 minutes a day after the challenge is over.

3. Sleep for not more than 6 hours

I normally get up at 6.00AM just in time to get ready for college. From today, I will sleep at 11PM itself and get up at 5AM so that I will have one hour extra in the morning for creating a ‘to do’ list for everyday.

Why 6 hours?

I always feel that one should sleep for 6 hours everyday to get full energy for the next day. Though many have proved to me that quality of sleep is much more important and even 5 hours of sleep would be enough. But I’m going to stick to 6 hours. I’ll sleep at 11PM and get up at 5AM. I will be doing this even after the challenge is over.

So those are my challenges. If you want to get involved in the challenge, get away from your computer right now and write down what you want to do for the challenge in a notebook. If you wish you can share it with me by writing a comment or writing it in a blog post or let me know by email.

Thanks to Glen for this idea. I recommend you to read his blog. You would also love his story.

Who doesn’t need motivation these days? Everyone needs it. There are always days when you feel low. This makes the whole day unproductive. How to motivate yourself to make more money online within 2 minutes?

It doesn’t matter who you are, if you are making money online, you need to be charged everyday to work and make the day productive.

So here’s how I do it.

Have you already earned your first check?

If you have already got your first check, take a screen shot of it and make it your desktop background or load it to your website and make it your browser homepage.

Every time you see this, you will be inspired. It works for me all the time. Whenever I feel unproductive, I see the screen shot of the first check I made online.

This reminds me that there is a lot of money to be made online. I have already done it before and so I can do it again.

What if you haven’t earned money online?

No worries. Nobody earned a check the minute they entered the web. I never made any money on the first day. In fact it took me nearly 10 days to earn my first check.

What I did to motivate myself before I earned any money was to get an image of a check from one of the gazillion sites online that have the image of a check (they are there everywhere). I made that image as my desktop background.

Whenever I saw that image, I got inspired to earn a check like that. When you see something hundreds of times a day and really desire to achieve it, your subconscious mind will be programmed for that.

Once it is there in your subconscious mind, you will work harder to reach your target.

How do you motivate yourself to make money online? Please share your views in the comments.

If the above sentence sounded like hype, continue reading every word in this post.

Who?

Yaro Starak, the owner of entrepreneurs journey blog and blog mastermind, has released a free ebook named membership site masterplan. As you might already know, Yaro always teaches many valuable things in his free ebooks and also in his paid courses. This ebook is one in that line.

Why free?

This is my guess. By providing free ebook, he is making it clear for you that he will be providing many times the value of the ebook in his paid course, membership site mastermind.

What’s in the ebook?

I download it today morning as soon as it was released. I have to tell you, the ebook offers so much value. You will find more information in membership site masterplan than what you will find in most of the ebooks that are sold for $47 or even $97.

Let me tell you the main points in the report that I liked very much. There are many other points. But these are the ones that taught me a lot.

1. How a free report can build your preeminence [P.g. 11]

This part explains how you can gain trust among people. If you want to succeed online, trust plays a major role. If people believe in you, they will obviously buy from you. Yaro explains how Blog Profits Blueprint helped him to build his preeminence.

2. Psychological Triggers and how it will help you to make more money [P.G. 35]

In this part, Yaro explains different triggers like social proof, reciprocity etc. The one point he made in risk reversal made me think. He said that “Some marketers now offer 150% money back guarantees”.

3. Set your membership site on auto pilot [P.G. 54]

Okay who doesn’t like making money on auto pilot? I like it the most. You spend some time on creating a site and it make money in the coming months without you having to work on it. Yaro explains how to set your membership site on autopilot. He also teaches you how to automate your marketing.

If you are looking to create a membership site or even learn some marketing techniques, you should get your hands on membership site masterplan. It is FREE. So you have nothing to lose.

Download membership site masterplan.

P.S.: When you download this free ebook and then go on and signup for mastermind course, I will get affiliate commissions. So make sure you let me know when you join the course through my link so I can give you a bonus product as a way of saying ‘thank you’.

You can not only have your latest flickr image as twitter background but let it automatically update every time you upload a picture to your flickr account.

Most of the bloggers, internet marketers and even celebrities have started tweeting and you need no other reason to join twitter. If you are not there in twitter, you are missing something. Join twitter right now. And don’t forget to add me.

Twitter backgrounds are to decorate your profile and make it look good. It will sometimes convince people to follow you. If you are using a default twitter background, it is time to change.

Before letting you know the service that allows you to have your latest flickr image as twitter background, I’ll point out some reasons why you should have a good flickr background (but you can always scroll down to see the service).

1. Convinces the twitter users, who have decided not to follow you, to follow you (at times)

2. Gives an exciting, scintillating, dazzling, brilliant, and amusing plus “enter all the synonyms here” twitter background. (Of course, only if you have that kind of a picture in flickr)

3. Attract designers and photographers

4. Fresh background everyday (if you upload a picture everyday)

And a lot more…

What is the service I am talking about?

It is Flickr my background. It is a service started by sawhorse whose other projects include the famous shorty awards.

1. Go to Flickr my background page

2. Fill the details they ask you

3. Validate your flickr account

4. Go to your twitter homepage and see the latest flickr image being shown as your twitter background

It is as simple as that.

If you want to stop using flickr my background, go their website and see at the bottom where they say “click here to stop updating your twitter background”.

Now you have a constantly changing twitter background.

Follow me on twitter here.

There are many twitter applications and twitter firefox addons in the web. Though twitter applications are used more than twitter firefox addons, there are quite a few firefox extensions for twitter that you could use, which will make tweeting fun.

Instant Tweets is the twitter firefox addon that makes tweeting fun. It is developed by Ben Clemons and Josh Fulfer. I installed the firefox extension yesterday and it seems like a lot of fun.

So what’s good about Instant Tweets?

Instant tweet uses your firefox address bar to type and send tweets. You can type anything you want in the address bar and send it as a tweet. It also shows how many characters are left in the tweet.

You can also tweet the current page links in two ways:

1. Simply click the bird icon in your address bar
2. Right click your mouse and choose “Tweet Current Page”

You can also tweet images using Instant Tweets. Simply right click the image you want to tweet and choose “Tweet this pic”.

One another feature that I like about Instant tweets is that you can know whether a person is following you or not. The Blue bird icon in the address bar turns RED when you are on the Twitter Profile of someone who is NOT following you. If it is BLUE, then the person is following you.

Instant Tweets is compatible with Firefox 2 and 3.

Grab the twitter addon for firefox here or download it directly from here. Visit the instant tweets home page to see a video tutorial of how this extension works

Add me on twitter here.
