Dumb Acts You Shouldn’t Do When Commenting

Commenting on other blogs is a great way to gain backlinks and traffic. You can also get a good relationship with the blog author by commenting on the blogs. While commenting on other blogs is very important, the ways one does it matters a lot. There are few things which you not do when commenting on other blogs. Now before reading it, I tell you that these are not meant to offend anyone. Here are the Dumb acts you shouldn’t do when commenting on other blogs:

Comments

1. Using A Keyword As Your Name:

If you are a regular commentator on few big blogs, you would have noticed that few people comment using a keyword. When you use a keyword as a name when you comment, you will get a bad impression in the author’s mind and also in the minds of few of the blog’s readers. Use you own name when commenting on other blogs.

2. Making One Word Comment:

I always use to think why people post reply in one word. You would have seen comments like “Nice”, “Great Post” etc. These comments provide no value to the post. At least expand your comment a little. The author knows that the blog post is nice. If not, he/she wouldn’t have posted it. Make a bigger comment even if it is not adding any information to the post.

3. Adding Your Blog’s URL At The End:

Every blogger will see you as a spammer when you post your blog URL at the end of your without adding any information to the post. You should provide URL’s only if it is highly necessary.

4. Making Comments Without Reading The Post:

You might be surprised to see this, but indeed there are few who does this. I have experienced it myself. To prove it, you just make a post with a Title not related to the post. You might get one or two commentators posting comments related to the title. This normally happens when you have the Top Commentators Plugin installed. People read the title and make a comment which is related to it and not to the blog post.

5. Commenting Continuously And Then Stopping Once You Have Reached The Top Commentators:

I have experienced this one also in my blog. I get 5 comments in a row and once the commentator’s name comes to the Top Commentators, he/she will leave the blog. They won’t make any more comments. Commenting continuously is not a bag thing. But commenting to the Top Commentators and then stopping it once you have reached there is a dumb act.

6. Commenting By Other Blogger’s Name And URL:

This one is a known issue which I saw in Kumiko’s blog. It is surprising to see people using other people’s URL and Name when commenting. What is the use yo you when you do like that? You only give the author of the blog, one minute happiness because when he/she sees the comment, they will surely get happy.

7. Using Other People’s Avatar:

In few blogs, you can see the avatar by the side of the name. Few people steal other blogger’s avatar and make comments. The avatar that appears will be the same as the one which you use in MyBlogLog. So few people steal other’s avatars and few people steal others’ blog in MyBlogLog too.

By doing the above Dumb Acts, you will only get your comment marked spam. So think before you comment. Fortunately, I have not received many comments like the above and most of my readers are good commentators. So, comment only if you have something useful or at least something with two lines. If someone makes a post on stats, then you can say “great stats” but not in all the other posts. Once again, Think Before You Comment.

you are so right !! I normally dont like ppl leaving one or two word comment but, one blogger asked me not to get over this as fast as possible. :( . Point 4 , 6 and 7, i have seen so many times on blog. Didn’t understand 1st point though…
I dont mind someone leaving the comment with a link unless its realted with a post, but dont like when someone leaves a big permalink instead of wrapping it in anchor tag

I disagree with the name issue. Many people like myself use a pen name or identity. I agree that keyword stuffing is bad, but using a pen name is not.

As for the single keyword comments. I don’t like them either. Yesterday I got 2 that had 5 words in them with a link.

I think I really ever screwed up #4, I know I shouldn’t have. No excuse. I try not to do the other ones and make an effort to try to add content or atleast stay on topic. This is a good story, way to go!

Kanak, In the first point I mean that there are few people who use keywords(which they want to rank well in Google) as their name. :)

Beach Bum, Pen name is not at all bad. I agree but keeping names like “Health Care” irritates few people. :)

BigMike, Thanks and don’t think of what you did you far. From now try to maintain quality comments. :) But wait, you have already made a quality one. :)

It won’t help their Google ranking when the blog owner puts their name or IP address in the blacklist because the blog owner is tired of wading through (or swimming around in) spam comments.

:D “dumb-dumb commentator” is the summary of my reading of your post.

dumb-dumb is not Dumb! but a ‘little bit’ dumb. :p
But sometimes I also become a dumb-dumb commentators too! There is some point that usually make my comment looks dumb-dumb. :D

    Sorry Ram,

I have to disagree with you on this one :”2. Making One Word Comment:”

There might be people who just want to be top commentators list but there are genuine people who leave a one word comment because these are the few reasons :

    1. They wanted to encourage their friend.
    2. They are in awe of what they read and don’t have the right words to write at that time.
    3. They might be rushing for times and wanted to let their friend know that they did read it and think it is a good one.
    4. Sometimes when I browse my friends blog and I found on that day, there is no comment, I will drop one word comment, not so much my name is in in the top commentator but to let my friend know that I was there and read his/her post. We all need some encouragement some times, sometimes a hug , sometimes a pad on our back, sometimes a short comment.

So my dear Ram, I am here to disagree with you, ha ha ha ha ha.
So might turn out to a word comment :):).

Very valid points, I hope that some of these frequent commenters will actually read and apply them! Thumbs up.

The act # 6 is actually quite dumb. I am sure when people find out that they have been cheated, they are never going to go back to that page again.

I am actually very quick when it comes to deleting comments that sounds like spam to me — names that sound like keywords, or are actually keywords (I’d manually change the name is the comment is valid), one or two-word comments such as “Nice site!” or “Great job!” or “Well done!”.

And I also erase the commentator’s signature if he includes a link to his blog. I mean, you already provided a link to your blog before you comment, so I don’t think you need to do it again =)
